"Often called the last transcontinental railroad, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific connected Chicago with Minneapolis, Omaha, Kansas City, Seattle, and Tacoma. At its peak, the carrier operated nearly 9,800 miles of track.
"Although it was essentially dieselized by the end of 1954, a summer grain rush in 1955 saw 38 steam engines being returned to service. Occasional standby use of these steamers ended on March 16, 1957.
" Like many railroads, Milwaukee dieselized with a variety of makes and models, with standardization - hampered by financial insecurity-finally beginning in the 1970s. As a result, first-generation diesels that disappeared on neighboring railroads survived longer on the Milwaukee, providing trackside observers a chance to see the newest Electro-Motive Division and General Electric models working alongside products of AIco, Baldwin, and Fairbanks-Morse.
